prof. dr hab. inz. Michal Choras, MBA (Full Professor)

I work as the full professor in the Institute of Telecommunications and Computer Science at Bydgoszcz University of Science and Technology (PBS) in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Formally, I am the head of the Department of Teleinformatics Systems.
I am the head of the PATRAS research group . In April 2021, we received the Team Scientific Award from the President of the City of Bydgoszcz.

In December 2021, I was granted the title of full professor from the President of Poland.
Earlier, I obtained the habilitation degree (DSc) in computer science from AGH Cracow in 2014.
From January 2015, I held the professor position at PBS Bydgoszcz. In September 2005, I defended (with distinction) my Ph.D. Thesis.
In 2023 I graduated from 2-year Master of Business Administration studies (MBA).

I'm the author and co-author of over 330 scientific papers .

Recently, I have been included in the Stanford List of Top 2% Scientists for 2022 in the main career list (and also only for 2022 singleyear). (according to: https://elsevier.digitalcommonsdata.com/datasets/btchxktzyw/6) Earlier, I have been also included in the Stanford Lists of Top 2% Scientists for 2020 and 2021.

Moreover, I edited more than 30 project deliverables/reports and contributed to over 100 project deliverables/reports.

I am the member of the University Senate (since 2016) and the member of the Faculty Board (since 2014). Now, I am the member of the Discipline (Computer Science and Telecommunications) Board.
I participated in several Comissions (e.g. Senate Comission for Science) and I led the Senate Comission for International Cooperation (2016-2020).
Recently, I was elected to University Senate for years 2020-2024.

In 2020, I was elected to become the member of the University Board (in Polish: Rada Uczelni) for 2021-2024 as the representative of academic community. University Board advices on strategic direction and financial aspects of the university.

I also work at Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at University of Hagen (FUH) in Germany, where I have been involved as the principal investigator in the project DeCoIMA (Detection of and Countermeasures against Information hiding-based Malware, 2017-2019). Moreover I have been also involved in projects IMACOSAR (Intelligent Monitoring and Countermeasures of Stego Malware and Ransomware) and StegoMaCoFi (Fingerprinting von Stego-Malware-Kommunikation).

I was the project coordinator of the successful H2020 European project SIMARGL (Secure Intelligent Methods for Advanced RecoGnition of malware and stegomalware), with budget around 6 Million Euro, led by FernUni Hagen.

Overall, I took part in winning and realizing projects worth over 100 Million Euro in total, with over 15 Million Euro for organizations I represented as partners.

I am also a lecturer at DOCTOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION studies of Cybersecurity and Digital Services at Polish Naval Academy in Gdynia (AMW).

I am also the member of Scientific Board of MCC (Martime Cybersecurity Centre) at Polish Naval Academy in Gdynia (AMW).

Security and IT Consulting

Apart from academia, I also work in commercial/business projects and initiatives. Moreover, I work as consultant and project manager in the area of security, cyber security. homeland security, telecommunications, IT systems and informatics. In 2011 I received PRINCE2 Project Management Certificate.

Moreover, I consult (nationally and internationally) IT systems and networks security problems as well as safety (military, crisis management, homeland security, CT, the police operational procedures) aspects. I am aware of security procedures and have several clearences (incl. national, EU, NATO).

I have been involed as the external expert for international and national organizations such as ENISA (European Network and Information Security Agency), European Science Foundation (ESF) or National Security Bureau (BBN).

I was the Chairman of Cybersecurity Thematic Area Group (TA7) at IMG-S (Integrated Mission Group Security) (2012-2014). Currently I am the Vice-chairman of TA7, the member of IMG-S SCG (Synthesis and Coordination Group) and I am also involved in activities of IMG-S TA2 on Communications.

I am involved in ECSO, and I was the member of the Partnership Board of the European Cyber Security Organisation (ECSO).

Michal Choras - Projects

I was the project coordinator of H2020 European project SIMARGL (Secure Intelligent Methods for Advanced RecoGnition of malware and stegomalware).

Previously I was the Coordinator of the FP7 CAMINO project . CAMINO was the Coordination and Support Action titled Comprehensive Approach to cyber roadMap coordINation and develOpment, a European research project in the security domain (Developing a Cyber crime and cyber terrorism research agenda) funded by the European Union 7th Framework Programme.

In 2012 I finished post-graduate studies on "Research Project Management and Research Reults Commercialization" at Faculty of Management and Economy, Gdansk University of Technology.

Michal Choras - Research

I am the head of the PATRAS research group working on pattern recognition, machine learning and artifficial intelligence in security applications.

My research is focused on pattern recognition in security domain, in particular on: signal analysis, image processing, passive biometrics and cybersecurity. I'm especially interested and involved in research concerning passive systems of human identification based on image analysis and emerging modalities.

My developments include geometrical feature extraction algorithms and methods for ear biometrics, as well as feature extraction and representation methods for lips recognition , face recognition, stereo & robotics vision and CBIR systems.
My recent research interests are biometrics based on keystroke dynamics and multimodal hand/palm biometrics . Recently, I have worked on lips recognition and knuckle texture features for biometric human identification.

I also work on multi-dimensional aspects of security and safety .

I work on cybersecurity, attacks detection and anomaly detection methods for IDS systems, network traffic pattern analysis, military network enabled capabilities, semantic network management (ontologies) and critical infrastructure protection (CIP).

I am also involved in research regarding homeland security, crisis management, social networks and CT.

Michal Choras - Awards, Reviews and Scientific Involvement

In April 2021, we received the Team Scientific Award from the President of the City of Bydgoszcz.

I was honoured several times for outstanding research by the Group Award of the 1st Degree by the Rector of UTP for publications and by the Individual Award of the 1st Degree by the Rector of UTP.

In 2011 I received the scholarship for young researchers from Ministry of Science.
I was honoured by the President of Bydgoszcz City Award for the young scientists in 2010.
